The World’s Most Unusual Hotels: Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor, Nairobi

When you think of unusual hotels that cost an arm and a leg, Kenyan hotels don’t really come to mind. However, the African country houses one of the most unusual hotels in the world; Giraffe Manor. The 140 acre property boasts a collection of lions, leopards, buffalos, and most importantly, the endangered Rothschild Giraffes.

What’s so unusual?

Wildlife themed hotels claim that guests can experience nature in their green themed rooms by serving them food in a bamboo bowl. The Giraffe Manor in Nairobi takes it to an entirely different level. While most wildlife hotels offer jungle safaris from the safety of a barricaded van, the hotel offers you an up-close fauna experience by hosting them as your dinner guests!

Every morning, the windows to the vineyard are opened. Craziness ensues from there onwards as all sorts of wildlife come to share a spot at your breakfast table, with the giraffes being guests of honor. If tall-necked friends aren’t your fancy, you can also choose to take a stroll along the hotel’s vine covered pathways which are home to a number of warthogs. You can also choose to visit the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage,  just a few minutes away from the property.

Rooms

If you’re expecting a luxurious reception with a private butler and valet parking, you’re in for a surprise. The hotel takes on a more informal approach by offering bare bone amenities in cozy surroundings. Customer service is both personal and mindful due to the low number of guests that can fit in at one time. The rooms are linked by a dining room and lounge that houses a couple of sofas, arm chairs and paintings.

The manor previously served as a giraffe sanctuary to encourage breeding of endangered giraffe species, such as the bull giraffe and the Rothschild giraffe. It was later converted to a private hotel with minimal structural changes, which is why there were only six bedrooms when the hotel first opened its doors to guests.

Today, there are a total of ten rooms, with 8 being deluxe tier. The rooms come with either a double, twin or king sized bed. If wildlife feeding is your primary motive, consider getting a first floor room as it’s more accessible to the giraffes.

Price Range

Giraffe Manor is relatively cheap as compared to other unusual hotels, being priced at around $1000 for a night (including all amenities as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner). If you’re going in a group or planning to stay for more than a few days, the hotel might also offer huge discounts. Do note that the hotel stays closed for the month of May for renovation and upkeep purposes.

Activities

While the hotel itself doesn’t boast of any exhilarating activities, it’s located near the elephant orphanage which you can visit. The secluded location makes it ideal for those who just want to relax for a few days.
